چکیده

Virtual agents are an important element of virtual environments that enhance their believability and autonomy. Nowadays, there are a number of architectures and languages for designing virtual agents and scripting their control process, but the majority of them cannot cope with the vagueness that characterizes a designer’s description of a location or direction using natural language, and, thus, fail to demonstrate complex spatial behavior in dynamic environments. We propose a framework for handling spatial vagueness in virtual agent control, which uses binary fuzzy relations to represent vague location descriptions and a fuzzy rule-based system for the agent control. We present a prototype implementation and a case study, in which the proposed framework is successfully used for a virtual agent’s locomotion in a dynamic environment.

Controlling Animated Agents in Natural Language

This paper presents a prototype dialogue system, K3 , in which a user can instruct agents through speech input to manipulate various objects in a 3-D virtual world. In this paper, we focus on two distinctive features of the K3 system: plan-based anaphora resolution and handling vagueness in spatial expressions. After an overview of the system architecture, each of these features is described. W...

K2: Animated Agents that Understand Speech Commands and Perform Actions

This paper presents a prototype dialogue system, K2 , in which a user can instruct agents through speech input to manipulate various objects in a 3-D virtual world. The agents’ action is presented to the user as an animation. To build such a system, we have to deal with some of the deeper issues of natural language processing such as ellipsis and anaphora resolution, handling vagueness, and so ...

A hybrid risk-aware design method for spatial datacubes handling spatial vague data: implementation and validation

Spatial data warehouses (SDWs) and spatial OLAP (SOLAP) are well-known business intelligence (BI) technologies that aim to support multidimensional and online analysis of huge volumes of data with spatial reference. Spatial vagueness is one of the most neglected imperfections of spatial data. Although several works propose new ad-hoc models for handling spatial vagueness, their implementation i...

Querying Vague Spatial Objects in Databases with Vasa

Recent years have been witness to the increasing efforts of scientists to design concepts and implementations that can adequately handle the vagueness and imprecision that is widespread in spatial data. Plenty of spatial entities, especially those that occur naturally such as mountains and biotopes, contain intrinsic vague attributes that make their representation as crisply bounded entities in...

Spatial Vagueness

This chapter explores the phenomenon of vagueness as it relates to spatial information. It will be seen that many semantic subtleties and representational difficulties arise when spatial information is affected by vagueness. Moreover, since vagueness is particularly pervasive in spatial terminology, these problems have a significant bearing on the development of computational systems to provide...
